White sage is a truly special plant that has been held in high regard for its sacred and purifying properties. People have been using it for centuries in various rituals and ceremonies.
The word sage salvia comes from the Latin word salvus, which means healthy, safe, or well. The word is also related to salveo, which means to heal.
One common practice is called smudging, where white sage is burned. This ritual is all about cleansing, purifying & protection, whether it's getting rid of negative energy or even warding off evil or unwanted spirits.
Through the smudging process we can cleanse & rejuvenate not only our own aura but also the energy of our space & objects. It's like giving everything a fresh start!
Burning sage is also believed to help clear the mind, increase wisdom and enhance spiritual awareness.
HOW TO:
Before you even light the sage stick, you should take a moment to state your intention & decide what you want to purify or release. Think of a mantra that includes this intention and repeat it while you are smudging yourself or your space.
You can also take some time to meditate on this intention to help calm the mind. This will help you connect with the energy and emotions of that mantra and make the smudging ritual more effective. Here are some mantras that you can use for smudging:
Before burning, make sure you open a door or window, so that the negative energy you want to get rid of has a way to escape.
When you're ready to light your sage, hold the sage as far from the burning end as possible.
Hold the sage at a 45-degree angle, light the sage, let it burn for around 20 seconds and then softly blow out the flame so that you see orange embers on one end. Then you can begin the process of cleansing & purifying your space.
If you also start to see the glow of the embers dimming you can softly blow on the lit end to revive the smoke.
It's useful to have a fireproof container or bowl to hold underneath the smudge stick to catch any ashes or embers.
Spiral & wave the smoke around your body, starting at the top of your head & work your way down to your feet (including under your feet).
Now that you have saged yourself, you can begin to sage your space.
Start at the front door of your home and light your smudge stick. Then, begin to move slowly around each room until you get to the back of the home.
Be sure to allow the smoke to drift into every corner & even the hidden spaces, like inside closets.
Once you have finished smudging, make sure your sage stick is completely extinguished. You can do this by dabbing the lit end into a small bowl of ash or sand. Avoid using water, since it may be difficult to reignite sage if it is extinguished by water.
Look at the end carefully to make sure it is no longer lit. When it is totally extinguished, keep your sage stick in a safe, dry place away from the sun.
Consider the alternative:
Sage spray is an amazing alternative when you are in a no-smoke zone. It’s easy to travel with and it smells stunning.
